monitor stand

concept: crispin horsfield

This design evolved from a need to improve the ergonomics and workspace of an office desk. After thinking about it and talking to various people, including Alexander Technique practitioner Nicholas Cann, there were various requirements that I wanted to fulfil:

A curved stand was the obvious solution and so the next step was to work out how many dividers would be appropriate. A single divider in the middle didn't look right, so we settled upon two. This had the benefit of having more slots for books. If need be an A4 magazine will fit sideways in the space.

The final design is 1.8m long with a gentle curve. The back is thin ply that has adequate space underneath for leads and even the ability to slide my mouse underneath.

Although I use four LCD monitors, another monitor stand in the office takes three 17" CRT monitors that weight about 75Kg in all.

Jonny is a Bristol-based carpenter with over 20 years experience in custom furniture building for offices and professional spaces, he brought his experience to bear on the final design. It uses 20mm birch ply for the flat surface and the supports with 6mm ply at the back.

This design could be made from eco-friendly MDF if need be.
